Football enthusiasts turned up in large
numbers on Sunday at Sipili Football Field. The occasion was to witness the handing
of Ol-Moran Member of County Assembly Football Tournament Trophy. Guests
present included Laikipia Governor and Laikipia County Assembly speaker. The
tournament was sponsored by Ol-moran Member of County Assembly.
The tournament was held to avoid idleness among the youths in
Ol-Moran ward. Five teams participated namely: Sipili Secondary school, Lariak
Secondary school, Kio, Charlton United and Kaharati. The final was between
Chalton United and Lariak Secondary school. Charlton United emerged victorious
with a 3-0 margin. John Kamau was the top scorer during the tournament with nine goals.
Speaking during the prize giving
ceremony, Ol-Moran Member of County Assembly Duncan Ndegwa, warned those
selling grass in the football pitch to desist from the act. Ndegwa told
football enthusiasts in Ol-Moran ward that another tournament will start soon
and the trophy will be handed in December.
Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu informed those present that
the County Government will work with youths. Governor Irungu promised the
youths that a county Football league will be formed.
“I will meet
with all football representatives in Laikipia County to discuss on how we will
form a Football league,” said Governor Irungu.
Chalton United was issued with a trophy as well as ten
thousand Kenya Shillings (10,000) for winning the tournament. Lariak Secondary
school who were the runners up got Five thousand Kenya shillings (5,000).
Football teams in
Ol-Moran were told to register for the new tournament which is about to begin.
Football teams will be required to pay five hundred Kenya shillings (500) to
register.
